Preparation for Interview

Applying for a job is an easy task however, an employer short listing a candidate’s resume and inviting for an interview is the hardest part. Employers look for several qualities in a candidate – to name a few, personal attire, knowledge and experience in the previous job, friendly and sociable person apart from other skills.

Here are some basic things to remember that will help you become better prepared for acing that interview!

  • Bring several hard copies of your resume. You never know if you will be interviewed by more than one person
  • Arrive at the interview at least 10 minutes early. But don’t arrive too early.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
  • Research the company before the interview.
  • Ask specific questions about the position and what the employer is looking for in the ideal employee for this position. Focus your questions on the employer, not on yourself.
  • Rehearse! You should know what your introductory statement to a potential employer would be. Know the key things that you want to say about yourself. Be prepared to give your introduction, answer questions like, what you have accomplished, what your key strengths are and why you are there for an interview.
  • Make eye contact. Offer a firm handshake at the beginning and at the end of the interview.
  • Be honest and get feedback. Do not misrepresent yourself and do not denigrate any previous employers. Ask about salary at the end of the interview and only in a final interview. Ask for feedback at the end of the interview. This will lead to a further clarification of your skills and make you a better fit for the position.
  • Close the interview strongly. You know what they are looking for so use this information to your advantage.
  • Be Yourself! Companies want to hire people who are not only qualified but have personalities that will add to their corporate environment and culture. Be energetic, confident responses go a long way towards reinforcing a positive impression.
